What Happens in a Brainspotting Session?
What to Expect From Start to Finish
Starting Brainspotting Therapy
Beginning a new therapy approach can bring up curiosity and uncertainty. Many people want to know exactly what will happen in a Brainspotting session before they begin.
At Wildflower Therapy Group, transparency and safety are key to the therapeutic relationship we form. Our goal is that you feel safe, comfortable, and supported throughout your healing journey.
Before the Session Begins
Your therapist will start by checking in with how you’re feeling and what feels present in your body or emotions that day. This could be anxiety, tension, sadness, or a sense of feeling stuck.
You don’t need to prepare a story or have clear answers.
It’s okay too if nothing comes to the surface immediately. Brainspotting works with whatever shows up naturally.
Your therapist will explain the process and make sure you feel grounded and supported before moving forward.
Finding a Brainspot
During the session, your therapist will gently guide you to notice where your eyes naturally settle when you focus on a feeling or sensation. This eye position may connect to a brainspot.
A brainspot is a specific eye position that connects to an area of the brain where stored emotional or traumatic experiences live.
Once a brainspot is identified, you’ll be invited to stay with it while noticing what happens internally. This might include emotions, memories, physical sensations, or shifts in awareness, but ultimately, there’s no right or wrong experience. Some sessions feel subtle, while others feel deeply releasing.
The Role of the Therapist
You’re not alone in the process. Your therapist will remain attuned to your nervous system throughout the session. They may offer grounding support, breath cues, or somatic interventions if needed. The therapeutic relationship is a key part of why Brainspotting feels safe and effective.
After the Processing
As the session winds down, your therapist will help you reorient and regulate. This may include grounding exercises or light, reflective conversation.
Some people feel lighter or calmer afterward. Others notice continued processing over the next few days. This is all normal and part of how the brain integrates healing.
Brainspotting as Part of Holistic Healing
At Wildflower Therapy Group, Brainspotting is woven into a holistic framework that honors your mind, body, and spirit. Sessions may also incorporate mindfulness, breathwork, or gentle somatic practices to support integration.
Healing isn’t always about recounting painful experiences. Just creating safety for your system to soften and release what it no longer needs to carry can be a powerful approach.
